Mehrere Holzkruzifixe können Giovanni Pisano stilistisch zugeordnet werden. Zu ihnen gehört das in Berlin aufbewahrte Fragment. Grundlegend für die Attribution und die Datierung waren die Kreuzigungsreliefs an Giovannis Marmorkanzeln in S. Andrea in Pistoia und im Dom zu Pisa. Das kleinformatige Werk vermittelt auf expressive Weise den qualvollen Tod des Gekreuzigten. Die allseitige, auf einer ›sezierenden‹ Naturbeobachtung beruhende Darstellung eines fast nackten Körpers ist in der Zeit um 1300 ohne Beispiel. In seiner räumlichen Entfaltung und monumentalen Wirkung gilt das Berliner Fragment als reifstes Werk seiner Holschnitzkunst. Es hat bis auf geringe Spuren seine Bemalung verloren.
